Installed new center console arm rest

Post by pete » Sun Feb 11, 2024 5:12 pm

...in 2000 Ford Ranger. Wish I had bought it sooner. Dude on eBay had the entire brand new OEM assembly for $125 last year. Now he's long gone and I had to buy the two parts separately for more money

I have a Forester and a Ranger. I bought the Ranger when the Forester engine blew, but instead of scrapping the Forester I found a relatively low-mileage engine for it

Ah fair enough.

I threw a cover over the old Subie and set an artificial disposition date. I stumbled across an engine from a newer model and bought it. It's hard to let old friends go.

I shelled out £460 on repairs to my car last month after it failed its MOT.
Repair immediately (major defects)
Exhaust Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (8.2.1.2 (c))
Exhaust carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle exceeds manufacturer's specified limits (8.2.1.2 (a))
Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (6.1.2 (a))
Offside Front Vehicle structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced under bonnet (6.1.1 (c) (i))
Nearside Rear Vehicle structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced (6.1.1 (c) (i))
Offside Rear Vehicle structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced (6.1.1 (c) (i))

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced (6.1.1 (c) (i))
Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
Compression in the engine was down severely, the exhaust was blowing and it needed welding in places.
But, £460. Didn't cost the earth to repair.

You guy obviously use road salt. I hate that sheeot. I grew up in a "salt" state and it is brutal on steel.

The donor engine for the Subaru came from a newer model. A beautiful car but it had come from Minnesota and the frame rails were rusted almost all the way through. I got it from an outfit in Charlotte NC USA who had about 100 Subarus on the lot. The guy pulled the engine and installed an MLS head gasket, valve stem seals, oil seals, spark plugs (spark plugs are a challenge to access on some boxer engines) etc etc. I drove up to CLT from ATL one Saturday and picked up the engine in my "new" Ranger

We do use salt on the roads although the gritters aren't out as much as they used to be in winters.

That's the local depot.
