We have very left wing people in the UK as well who get freaked out by the idea of private ownership of any sort of weapon.

Look up the national guard. That's really where that descended from.

We have the Army Reserve (formerly the Territorial army) and the Atholl Highlanders.
The only legal private army in Europe.


They are armed with .303 Lee Metford rifles.
